car dies if running and goes in reverse wont start again until u unplug the battery

Yesterday I started up my car and went to back out of the driveway and as soon as you shift my 95 accord 4cyl automatic all the way into reverse the car dies, and all the gauge lights like seatbelt, indicator lights shut off. You try and start the car again and it will just crank and crank. The only way to get it to start again is to disconnect the battery for even 1 second then it will start again.

You can get it to start and hold the shift lever about 1/2 way into reverse and you can back up, then you have to kill the engine shift into park take the key out and put it into the shift lock bypass keyhole, shift it into neutral and start the car again then put in drive to go anywhere.

Does anyone have any ideas, I am stumped.

The same thing will happen even if the key is on and the car is not running and you put it in reverse, the gauge custer lights will all shut off and you cant get them to come back on or start the car until you disconnect the battery again. The wierd thing is you only have to disconnect the battery for a split second. And it will start up again.

    Please help.

i don't know much when it comes to trannies, but sounds like reverse is f***ed
I don't mind being knocked off, ridiculed, made to feel minuscule, When you consider the source it's kinda pitiful.

But if you hold it from going all the way into reverse when running reverse works just fine. I think it some kinda sensor or something because it does the same thing to the power when the car isn't running.

I also had a compustar alarm/remote start that I had in my old civic installed only 9 days ago and this has been happening for 3 dyas now. They say its a coinsidence not sure if spelled right, but I call b.s.
I took the alarm brain out for about 12 hours now, just went out and started the car and put in reverse and no problems. Stayed running I put in reverse and back to drive etc 10 times and it stayed running.

Does this sound like the alarm brain which has a lifetime warranty or a possible ignition control switch?

I agree smells like alarm or auto start, rip it out.

If not then torque inverter solenoid, just taking a wild stab at it.
I know a guy who's addicted to brake fluid. He says he can stop any time. :-B

Everything worked fine today when leaving my house then after going into reverse for the 3rd time it did it again.

I brain for the alarm is sitting on the floor so its not that.

Im sorry to inform you that you have 1 of those unique problems that only you can solve. Been there! If it wasnt for someone having the problem 1st and/or fixing it & posting, then others wouldnt know about it & there wouldnt be any search results for it. Hence why you've found no definite answers yet. My guess is that its within the shifting device & not the trans. Could be the connector(s) to the shifter as well. Hope you get it solved. GL!

Well today I got the car warmed up, drove for 15 minutes. Then pulled over and put the alarm brain back in. Then lef the car running and reset the remote start timer button on the alarm brain. No problems since.
Does it make sense. No but im happy.

if they installed the remote start wrong that would be plausible reason due to the remote start "brain" being hooked up to the park/neutral safety switch if it grounds out somehow its possible that it could trick the remote start into thinking that it is being started out of park and shut the car down.

have you had it scanned for trouble codes?

just throwin this out there.... I've had problems with negative wires not being grounded well. makes crazy things happen. There use to be a clicking noise by my ECU. Door locks go nuts, car wont start but then later it will... Check ur negatives if it comes back. Sounds like faulty wiring somewhere tho...

The only check engine light thrown is 12 and I cant figure it out, it says egr issue. Only time the light comes on is when the car is cold. If its warm the light will not come on. So it resets everytime the engine shuts off.

its possible your egr valve is sticking open when you shut it off warm and when you start it cold its still open and recirculating the exhaust gases and causing the engine to stall out. Try cleaning your egr ports and the valve and see if it clears it up ive also heard that if you apply a vaccum 8"/hg to the egr valve at idle it should open the valve and cause the engine to stall
