H23A DOHC VTEC Blue Top Engine Photos / Build / Pics / Info ETC.

Its pretty interesting reads on Google about the H23A VTEC engines...

Apparently they are pretty uncommon engine built by Honda as a "factory frankenstein", and not that many people know specs or specifics about this engine other than it is OBD-II, and makes about 200HP / 163 TQ - 2.3L VTEC, similar to the H22A but with a longer stroke (87mm Bore / 95mm Stroke).

Since my engine is torn apart, is there any photos or info I can shed light onto for anyone? :) Maybe we can help eachother here....

H23A DOHC VTEC (Blue Top) Photos / Pics:

Initial tear down and inspection of the H23A

Pulled the head, removed the retainers/keepers, valve springs & valves. Just need to remove the rocker arm assembly. Headgasket was still in good shape, no missing material or gaps.
The block still needs to be disassembled....ugh! Engine builds are definitely time consuming.

looks good. I used the same Bluepoint valve tool on mine. Pretty nifty tool. I polished out my block when i had it torn apart. Just an idea.

so did you use valves and V-springs for gthe h22? i assume they are the same. I shyed away from the bluetop when i bought mine cause i wasnt sure what parts were interchangable. I too put skunk2 stage 1 cams and valves and springs. Id be interested to hear the numbers when its done. just to compare.

The full valvetrain is SuperTech, minus the cams @ skunk2. Basically this IS an H22, the head is a H22A (P13) head on a H23 bottom end, so all of the H22a4 parts are interchangeable on top.

Where/who did the head work? Did you port/polish? or just clean it up and cut the valves?

Also, noticed you have an open block. I thought most of the JDM blocks were closed deck blocks. Did it have those fiber carbon'weeve sleeves that the H22 is imfamous for? What is the date stamp on it? just curious to see if the changes are date related. ( my own curiousity)

I've seen both open deck and closed deck blocks. I was under the assumption all the JDM's wer closed, but maybe its just the older ones.

so does that mean the crank and rods are H23? i mean, if you were replacing something in the bottom half, which would it be?

Also, with the bottom half a H23, does it have the oil splash shield and squirters?

    again, just curious. not critiquing.

Believe it or not, i see more bluetops for sale than h22a.

Nice work. Engine looks to be healthy.
